Help for Keeping Your Writer Mojo This Winter
With the winter months upon us, it can be challenging to get the writing done. The cold weather and fewer daylight hours can tempt you to just curl up in a nice warm bed for the day, affecting both your health and productivity. Here are some practical tips to keep you healthy and inspired this season:
1. Create a Cozy Writing Space
Your workspace should be warm and inviting. Make it the next best thing to curling up in bed. Have soft lighting, and keep your favorite warm blanket nearby. I keep a good-quality space heater nearby so my hands don’t get too cold, making it uncomfortable to work. A nice hot mug of coffee or tea will not only warm your insides, but will also help keep your hands warm.
2. Stick to a Writing Schedule
Shorter daylight hours can not only disrupt your daily routines, but also your writing routine. Establish a daily writing schedule and try to stick to it as best you can. Being consistent can help fight off any seasonal sluggishness and keep your creative juices flowing. Or try giving yourself a daily word count that you consistently hit each day to keep yourself accountable.
3. Stay Active
It’s natural to want to hole up somewhere until it gets warmer, but you still need to move. Staying active boosts both your physical and your mental health. There are lots of ways to get some movement in while staying nice and warm at home. Try yoga or do simple stretches during writing breaks to keep your energy levels up and keep the blood flowing.
4. Get Enough Vitamin D
Winter often brings less sunlight, which can lead to not only a drop in vitamin D levels, but can also affect your mental health, causing depression. Consider taking a vitamin D supplement or spending time outdoors during midday when the sun is brightest. 5. Stay Hydrated
It’s easy to forget about hydration when it’s cold, but drinking water is essential for your health and focus. Keep a water bottle at your desk and sip throughout the day. Herbal teas are also a great way to stay warm and hydrated.
6. Connect with Fellow Writers
Winter isolation can be challenging. Stay connected with writing groups, whether online or in-person, to share ideas and stay motivated.
By taking care of your body and mind, you can make winter a productive and enjoyable season for your writing. Stay warm, stay inspired, and keep writing!
