The Publishing Process

Why get professional editing? Did you know that many of the platforms, such as Amazon Kindle, will penalize you if your book is found to have too many errors? Self-published books have a reputation of being bad quality due to spelling errors, inconsistencies, and lacking cohesion. Books with such errors make for a bad reading experience.

In order to avoid that, you’ll want to get your work professionally edited. A professional editor will help guide your book through all the necessary steps it needs to get published. Here are the major steps for self-publishing your novel so your work is clean and easy for your readers to understand.

Step 1: Write your book.

Step 2: Find an editor to work with. Many editors will bundle the following services so you have a one-stop shop.

Step 3: Send your manuscript to the editor for line editing. This editing is done at the line and paragraph level. It is to check for clarity, tone, flow, and language. You then make recommended edits.

Step 4: Send it back to the editor for a copyedit. This is the technical edit for things like grammar, spelling, and punctuation, etc. You then make those recommended edits.

Step 5: Send it back to the editor for a final proofread. This is the last chance to find any errors before publishing.

At each step, editors will suggest edits and it is up to you, the author, to accept or decline. It is not the editors job to rewrite you book, but to help you get the best book out there.
